Women and their deep connection to nature are the center of art by Bharti Prajapati. Her fascination began while studying textile design in college, when she traveled to Kutch, Gujarat—the tribal women’s harmony with one another and with their environment made a lasting impression on the artist. “Our planet has nurtured and sustained life abundantly with its immense wealth of elements… We experience and interact with the Five Elements at every moment in our lives. This inclusive coexistence and interdependency has created a beautiful story around us,” the artist says. In her popular series Earth Story and The Seed, she draws on shapes and patterns from nature and utilizes color as an important symbol. Before establishing herself within Indian contemporary art, Bharti Prajapati studied textiles at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, and Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai. She spent a decade working as a professional textile designer before turning to painting as a way to share the beauty of Indian craft and tradition. She has exhibited widely across India and internationally, with shows in New York, London, Singapore and other major art centers.
